The NFL franchise tag deadline is looming with the start of the new league year (and free agency) approaching on March 17. The league's franchise tag deadlines and rules aren't always totally clear, but every year fans can expect plenty of teams to use the tag.
Here's everything fans need to know about the franchise tag, as well as a full list of players franchise tagged on Tuesday.
What is NFL Franchise Tag
The NFL franchise tag is a one-year designation that teams may place on a player to prevent them from hitting free agency. NFL.com provides the following definition:
This is a one-year tender of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position over the last five years, or 120 percent of his previous salary, whichever is greater. The player can negotiate with other teams. The player's current team has the right to match any offer or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation if he signs with another club.- Kevin Patra, NFL.com
NFL Franchise Tag Deadline
The NFL's 2022 franchise tag deadline is at 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. The next deadline is for teams to reach a contract extension with a franchise tagged player. This needs to happen, or else the player will become a free agent the following year, is at 4 p.m. EST on July 15, 2022.

Davante Adams Franchise Tag
One of the biggest potential free agents of the 2022 NFL offseason, Davante Adams' future as a Green Bay Packer may depend on the franchise tag. The Packers have yet to officially decide on whether they will franchise tag Adams.
Chris Godwin Franchise Tag
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not yet officially used the franchise tag on Chris Godwin, but reports are that they are expected to have a "90% chance" of franchise tagging Godwin.
