We are now in Week 5 of most standard fantasy baseball leagues and, by Wednesday, you're likely starting to get a sense of how your team's week is playing out. If the outlook is bleak, here are some players that are likely available on the waiver wire, who you might want to pick up to bolster your fantasy team.
1. Jose Martinez, 1B/OF, St. Louis Cardinals
Jose Martinez has been on a tear lately, recording multiple hits in five of his last nine games. His recent streak, which includes 11 straight starts, has pushed Martinez's slash line up to .343/.365/.443, which is right in line with his career averages of .310/.370/.474 through about 1,000 plate appearances. That suggests he could continue to succeed at the dish.
2. Carter Kieboom, SS, Washington Nationals
The middle infield position is notoriously shallow at this point in the season, but don't sleep on Carter Kieboom. He has only played four games so far at the MLB level, but dominated Triple-A this year, slashing .379/.506/.636 through 66 at-bats. Look for Kieboom to continue to get playing time while Trea Turner is out and maybe even earn a permanent role in the bigs.
3. Chris Bassit, SP, Oakland Athletics
Chris Bassit is coming off of a strong performance against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday that saw him toss seven innings and record nine strikeouts while surrendering just one run and three hits. Bassit has only given up one earned run this season in two starts and he will likely pitch next against a lowly Pittsburgh Pirates team that sits at the bottom of the NL Central.
4. Nate Lowe, 1B, Tampa Bay Rays
Nate Lowe joined the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday as their fifth-slotted hitter and is expected to get a lot of action in the coming days. Through 90 Triple-A plate appearances this season, Lowe slashed .300/.444/.543 and is believed to have legitimate big-league power.
5. Jacob Webb, RP, Atlanta Braves
Jacob Webb is a rookie reliever for the Atlanta Braves who could see an increased role quickly. Webb has yet to allow an earned run this year, while notching five strikeouts, one win and one save. If you team needs relief help, buying in on Webb could be a great fix.
