The Atlanta Falcons have had just two winning seasons since 2014. The last NFC South division title was in 2016 when the Falcons went 11-5 and made it to the Super Bowl before being on the wrong end of the most notable collapse in Super Bowl history. It's been mostly downhill since then, including a 4-12 season in 2020 that resulted in the firing of head coach Dan Quinn.
A new general manager, head coach and strategy appears to be in place. The first NFL Draft for Falcons' new GM Terry Fontenot could start with the Falcons trading down in the upcoming draft. That would add more picks and additional draft capital if they trade their No. 4 overall selection.
With nine picks in the 2021 draft, its clear Atlanta's newfound strategy is to compile assets ahead of the draft in an attempt to rebuild that way.
Atlanta Falcons 2021 NFL Draft
The Falcons have been in a poor draft capital position for years, ranking near the bottom of the league. As Warren Sharp points out, Atlanta now ranks near the top of the draft capital rankings.
Falcons fans can get excited about the potential and upcoming NFL Draft. Whether Atlanta decides to keep the No. 4 pick or not, or select a quarterback to replace Matt Ryan, its draft capital position provides an opportunity to rebuild quickly. Fontenot is on the clock along with new head coach Arthur Smith as the Falcons try to take advantage of their draft capital position.
