When the severity of Drew Brees' ribs injury was revealed, everyone expected the New Orleans Saints would be starting Jameis Winston over Tayson Hill. After all, when faced with the same decision last year, Sean Payton opted to go with Teddy Bridgewater over the BYU product.
However, Payton shocked the NFL media landscape on Friday when he announced that Hill will be the Saints' starter in Week 11. And now it looks like we finally know why.
Payton is reportedly using this as an opportunity to evaluate if Hill is capable of being a franchise quarterback. That's certainly an interesting development, as that's exactly the opportunity most thought Winston would be auditioning for during this stretch.
The 30-year-old Hill couldn't have asked for a better situation for his first start. Hill will take on the Atlanta Falcons, who are giving up the second-most passing yards in the league, surrendering 310.3 per game.
Potentially playing for his NFL future, Hill could be looking at a big payday down the road if he takes care of a beatable Falcons' secondary twice in the next three weeks.
