There may not have been a more dominating player through the last five weeks of the 2020 season than running back David Montgomery. The Chicago Bears starter racked up 681 total yards and 7 touchdowns during that span and finished the year as the No. 4 RB in PPR scoring.
Montgomery will be looking to ride that momentum into the fall and provides reliability as an RB2 in fantasy football. With a current average draft position of No. 28 overall and No. 16 amongst running backs (according to FantasyPros), the third-year pro can be taken with confidence in the third round.
David Montgomery Fantasy Outlook
It's notable to point out that Montgomery received his biggest workloads of the season when the Bears were in the thick of the playoff race. He saw at least 22 carries in Weeks 15-17 and made the most out of his opportunity. The 24-year-old put together his first 1,000-yard season in the NFL.
It's intriguing to see Montgomery produce these kind of numbers while playing in an offense that averaged just 22.4 points per game last season (No. 23 in NFL). His ground-and-pound mentality works well for the Bears and it also provides fantasy managers with a pretty safe floor every week.
The only thing keeping Montgomery from providing another top-five season is the depth behind him in the backfield. Tarik Cohen seems close to a return and should take the majority of the receiving work away from Montgomery. Plus, Chicago signed veteran Damien Williams in free agency. He should cut into Montgomery's carries a bit more than Cordarelle Patterson did last year.
David Montgomery ADP
All things considered, Montgomery is a great option when looking a mid-range running backs to take in the first couple rounds. However, don't reach for him thinking he could end up as the No. 1 RB spot in fantasy football. Tempering expectations is important in a situation like this.
Montgomery checks in as the RB14 in The Duel's 2021 fantasy football rankings.
