Detroit Lions fans were obviously glad to see starting running back D'Andre Swift back on the field in Week 8 after he missed three games due to shoulder and ankle issues. It's best to pump the brakes, though, after head coach Dan Campbell stated the coaching staff may have pushed Swift too hard.
Detroit Lions Injury News
Campbell took part in an interview with 97.1 The Ticket on Tuesday morning and made a simple, yet clear statement. He said that Swift is "not back" and that he received "one too many carries." This comes as a bit of surprise after Swift participated in every practice without limitations last week.
Swift posted 33 yards and 1 touchdown on 10 touches (5 carries, 5 receptions) in a 34-27 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. He confirmed to reporters on Monday that he was not yet at 100%, but did say the "plan is to progress and just keep better each day." Practicing this week will go a long way.
Campbell mentioned that the strategy now is to keep an eye on Swift's development and determine his touch count on a week-to-week basis. That certainly makes it seem like veteran Jamaal Williams will serve as the top RB in Week 9. He logged 76 yards 1 touchdown on 13 touches against Miami.
The Lions own a 1-6 record on the year and are falling out of the playoff race in the NFC. Swift's health is of the utmost importance for Detroit, so taking a safe approach with his snaps may be the best move. This is a big storyline to keep an eye on ahead of a matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
Detroit has odds set at +1750 to earn a postseason berth, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
