Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook has been his team's heart and soul this season, providing incredible production on the field and in fantasy. However, Cook will be unavailable for his team's finale in Week 17 due to a family emergency that will end his season early.
Cook currently ranks second in the league in both attempts (312) and rushing yards (1,557). The fourth-year RB is also tied for the most rushing touchdowns this season with 16. It's been a career year for the former Flordia State star, who ranks as RB2 in PPR fantasy scoring.
With the Vikings eliminated from playoff contention, it's possible Cook would've been held out of Week 17 anyway, but this news confirms that fantasy managers will need to look elsewhere for RB help.
Alexander Mattison Fantasy Outlook
Alexander Mattison would be line for Cook's workload this week, but he's dealing with a concussion heading into Week 17 and hasn't been cleared yet.
Mattison is averaging 6.3 rushes and 28.3 yards per game this season in relief efforts behind Cook. His standout performance came in Week 5 when he turned 20 rushes into 112 yards and grabbed 3 catches for 24 additional yards through the air.
Minnesota's Week 17 opponent, the Detroit Lions, presents a mouth-watering matchup. They're allowing the second-most fantasy points per game (31.4) to RBs this season. Mattison would be a fantastic starter choice in Week 17 if he's cleared to play.
Ameer Abdullah and Mike Boone Fantasy Outlook
Fantasy managers looking to capitalize on the Lions' poor defense could look at Ameer Abdullah or Mike Boone if Mattison is unable to play.
Abdullah only has 8 attempts this year, but he'd easily eclipse that number if he's Minnesota's starter in Week 17. Plus, he'd have a chance to play against his former team, setting up an intriguing revenge game.
Boone has just 6 attempts this season, although he did score a rushing touchdown for the Vikings in Week 16 against the New Orleans Saints.
Abdullah or Boone are sleeper picks at the moment, but they could be in for productive days if Mattison sits in Week 17.
