Cowboys Add Quarterback Depth With Waiver Claim

While it's quite clear that Dak Prescott is the No. 1 quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, his injury history suggests the importance of the entire depth chart. Dallas was busy during Tuesday's final 53-man roster cuts by releasing backups Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci.
It didn't take long for Dallas to add some more depth to the QB room. On Wednesday, the Cowboys claimed former Carolina Panthers backup Will Grier on waivers. Grier adds a third body to the quarterback room and raises some questions surrounding the pecking order of this depth chart.
Cowboys have claimed ex-Panthers QB Will Grier on waivers. That gives team three QBs on the roster between Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. We'll see what, if anything, this means for Rush's place on 53. Rush likely to be active Week 1 as Grier learns offense.

Will Grier Cowboys
Both Grier and Rush present a very small sample of NFL experience. Grier appeared in just two games for the Panthers back in 2019 and was quite underwhelming with his 0 touchdowns and 4 interceptions ratio. He was highly regarded during his senior season of college at West Virginia but fell to the third round of that year's draft.
On the other hand, Rush has attempted just three passes throughout three seasons with the Cowboys. He's 1-for-3 on those attempts and has operated as a deep backup on Dallas' depth chart.
For now, Rush will likely stay on the active roster as Grier learns the offense and the Cowboys are hopeful neither backup will have to see any action if all goes well with Prescott's health.
Dallas enters Week 1 of the NFL season as 7.5-point underdogs at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
