After weeks of speculation, the Carolina Panthers finally made a move to trade away star running back Christian McCaffrey. News broke on Thursday night that the Panthers flipped McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange a trio of 2023 mid-round picks, and a fifth-round pick in 2024.
McCaffrey spent the first 5.5 years of his NFL career in Carolina, the team that drafted him No. 8 overall back in 2017. And he was brilliant, putting together a pair of 1,000+ rushing yard campaigns and 32 total TDs.
The Pro Bowl back took to Twitter on Friday morning to share a heartfelt goodbye to the entire Panthers organization.
Christian McCaffrey Trade
It's a simple message, but tugs at the heart strings. "I'm forever grateful for all of the people who have helped make these past 5.5 years so special for me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Carolina, I will always love you #KeepPounding," the Tweet read.
Panthers fans will always remember McCaffrey for his electric plays and superstar abilities as a pass-catching RB. The only thing that held the 26-year-old back, at times, was a brutal stretch of injury troubles. McCaffrey played just 10 games between the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
This signals the continuation of a rebuild for Carolina. This is a franchise that has yet to figure out a long-term solution at quarterback, has failed to find a compliment to DJ Moore in the WR room, and possesses no true defensive identity.
For now, the Panthers hold just +5000 odds to win the NFC South on FanDuel Sportsbook.
