As the Kansas City Chiefs look to rebound from last week's loss, their special teams unit will be shorthanded again when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Chiefs announced on Saturday that kicker Harrison Butker has been ruled out of the Week 4 Sunday Night Football affair.
Butker has been sidelined with an ankle injury that he suffered in Kansas City's season opener. The 27-year-old kicker hasn't practiced since Week 1 and while he was initially seen as a game-time decision, the Chiefs were comfortable with ruling him out more than 24 hours before kickoff.
Harrison Butker Injury Update
Matthew Wright was elevated from the practice squad in a corresponding move and will assume kicking duties for Butker in the meantime. This was just days after the Chiefs released Matt Ammendola. The 25-year-old Ammendola went 3-of-4 on both field goals and extra-point attempts thus far this season. He's also recorded a touchback on 60% of his kickoffs, while his longest field goal of the season has been a 31-yarder.
Wright is a former UCF product who spent the 2021 season playing 14 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars, going 21-of-24 and 13-of-15 on field goals and extra points, respectively.
Only time will tell just how long Butker will be sidelined. He was eligible to return to the lineup this week, so hopefully his return is right around the corner.
Chiefs vs Buccaneers Odds
The Chiefs need their special teams unit to be close to perfect if they hope to beat the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl LV rematch. It's expected to be a competitive affair, proven by FanDuel Sportsbook listing the Bucs as the slight 1-point favorites at home.
