MLB's annual Winter Meetings kick off in the first week of December and it's resulted in a wave of new rumors and speculation about the offseason market. One of the teams involved is the St. Louis Cardinals, especially after general manager John Mozeliak shared some of the club's intentions via a phone interview on Tuesday.

In the conversation, Mozeliak shut down the idea of St. Louis targeting the most robust position in this year's free agent class: shortstop.

Once again, several big-name free-agent shortstops are on the open market with the likes of Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean St. Louis will be shopping for these All-Star names.

When asked about adding a shortstop, Mozeliak made his intentions clear with a simple comment reported by MLB insider Ken Rosenthal. "Tommy Edman is a very, very good shortstop.”

Rosenthal explains that the Cardinals would not look to add at shortstop, unless there's some kind of "bargain" involved. "It’s doubtful [Mozeliak] could strike a bargain in free agency or in a trade," said Rosenthal.

Edman and Paul DeJong split time at shortstop this year. Edman enjoyed perhaps his best offensive season as a pro, but slashed just .265/.324/.400 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs. That's a far cry from the offensive production of Correa or Turner. Meanwhile, DeJong suffered the worst offensive season of his career with a .157/.245/.286 slash line.
