Budda Baker just became the highest paid safety in NFL history. The Arizona Cardinals inked the two-time Pro Bowler to a four-year, $59 million deal.
The only person happier than Baker about this deal might be Denver Broncos standout safety Justin Simmons, who is due for a new deal of his own next offseason.
Simmons is likely to eclipse the deal that Baker just got. The Broncos' safety received Pro Football Focus' highest overall grade among all safeties (90.7) in 2019. Baker, meanwhile, received a 71.4 grade from PFF.
The 6-foot-2 safety excels in all facets of the game. He racked up 93 tackles and received an 86.1 grade as a run defender from PFF. Simmons also held opposing quarterbacks to a 43.6 passer rating when targeted in coverage (53 targets), had 15 passes defended and tallied 4 interceptions. He's one of the best safeties in the league and is a cornerstone of an emerging Denver defense.
Simmons has never quite gotten the recognition he deserves, as he's never been named to a Pro Bowl, but that should all change when his contract is up. Thanks to Baker, Simmons is about to get paid.
