The Denver Broncos are off to a disappointing 3-5 start following their Week 9 bye, but that hasn't stopped the franchise from attempting to make improvements to the roster. In fact, Denver just narrowly missed out on adding a former first-round draft pick and potential starter to their best unit.
According to NFL insider Field Yates, the Broncos were denied a waiver claim for recently released Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram.
The Green Bay Packers won Abram's waiver claim because of a higher priority. He had recently lost his starting role to Duron Harmon and had been rumored in trade deadline talks, but ultimately no deal was done.
Denver's defense has kept the team afloat this year. The unit ranks second in points allowed, yards allowed, and top-10 in sacks. Although Abram has struggled in 2022, adding a three-year starter to a secondary that ranks first in Football Outsiders' pass-defense DVOA metric is never a bad idea. Perhaps a change of scenery will result in Abram turning his season around.
The Broncos will have to move forward without this addition. They prepare for a Week 10 clash with the Tennessee Titans, entering that matchup as slim 2.5-point road underdogs, per NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
