After the release of Giovani Bernard last month, the Cincinnati Bengals decided it was time to go all-in on Joe Mixon at running back. Bernard's absence may have created a hole in the Bengals' offensive scheme, but the coaching staff is confident in Mixon's ability to fill that spot.

Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan recently said that he wants to see Mixon on the field for every single down.

Joe Mixon Role Bengals

Mixon struggled to stay on the field last season and missed the last 10 games of the 2020 season due to injury. Still, when the four-year NFL veteran was healthy, Cincinnati featured Mixon as their primary back. In 2019, Mixon's last fully healthy season, he started all 16 games and saw 278 carries to Bernard's 53.

Callahan admitted that Mixon will have to continue working on his pass-blocking to fill this new role, but remains confident in his abilities.

Cincinnati missed Mixon's productivity last season as the Bengals finished with the 24th-best rushing attack with 1,668 yards and only 13 touchdowns.

As it stands, the Bengals are still working back from their rebuild. FanDuel Sportsbook's AFC Championship odds give the Bengals +4800 odds to win the conference.
