At one point in time, Domingo Acevedo was the No. 4 pitcher in the New York Yankees organization. However, his pitching velocity began to drift off and eventually he fell out of favor with the organization. Acevedo signed a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics this past year in hopes that he could get his MLB career back on track. Fast forward to Monday and it's looking like he may soon get his chance.

The Athletics optioned pitcher Jesus Luzardo to their Triple-A affiliate on Monday while subsequently selecting Acevedo's contract. If everything goes well, the former Yankees top prospect may finally get to make his MLB debut this season.

Oakland Athletics News

After years of being labeled as a "bust," Acevedo has been absolutely lights out this season in the minor leagues. He currently has a 2.76 ERA through 16.1 innings pitched as a reliever for the Las Vegas Aviators, averaging a dominant 14.9 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. He's given up just one home run while only walking three batters during that span.

If he can replicate any type of that success at the MLB level, Acevedo could be exactly who Oakland needs in its bullpen. The Athletics are already averaging a 3.86 team ERA (13th), however, they're also averaging just 8.4 SO/9. Needless to say, the club would likely appreciate it if Acevedo could help improve either of those numbers.

At 44-29, the Athletics are currently tied with the Houston Astros for the top spot in the AL West. However, the A's do have some work to do as their +145 odds to win the division rank behind the Astros' -175 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
