The Houston Astros' outfield depth cannot afford to take a hit, but that's exactly what seems to be happening. Aledmys Diaz exited Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox with discomfort in his left groin and manager Dusty Baker expressed a stint on the injured list could be coming.

Aledmys Diaz Injury Update

Diaz was in obvious pain after running down a line drive off the bat of White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal to end the third inning. He took his time getting back to the dugout and was then replaced by Chas McCormick. Baker does not expect Diaz to return during Houston's current week-long road trip.

The 32-year-old utility player was more optimistic himself, citing the issue to be only tightness. He mentioned that when he missed 36 games in 2020 with a groin injury, he had felt a "pop" out on the field. That "pop" was absent this time around, which means he avoided the worst case scenario.

Baker has been relying on Diaz as a starter more and more as the season rolls on. On the year, Diaz is slashing .252/.303/.417 through 78 games. He has also logged 31 runs scored, 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 32 RBI. His has been exceeding expectations as a player used to coming off the bench.

For now, look for McCormick and recent trade acquisition Trey Mancini to man left field as Diaz recovers. That leaves Mauricio Dubon and Jake Meyers to man center field. The Astros currently have the second-best odds to win the World Series at +350, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
