The Atlanta Falcons' quarterback depth was dealt a serious blow on Saturday when presumed backup A.J. McCarron went down with a scary knee injury. It turned out to be a torn ACL, leaving just undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks as the only non-Matt Ryan QB left on the roster.
Falcons head coach Arthur Smith revealed what his team's plans are to address this clear area of need.
Falcons Backup QB
Smith said Monday that Atlanta will work out QBs at practice this week, sign one of them, then monitor the waiver wire after the final preseason games this weekend. It's the best approach to the situation, since the free-agent options on the market aren't the most appealing and more QBs will be available after the final round of training camp cuts next week.
McCarron hadn't exactly starred in his time this preseason, though his absence is an unexpected obstacle now facing the Falcons. Franks is promising but still needs seasoning, so Atlanta could use a more experienced signal-caller to fall back on in case anything happens to Ryan.
To Ryan's credit, he's only missed three games in his entire career since entering the league in 2008, but having depth behind solidified is one less thing to worry about ahead of Week 1.
Atlanta owns +200 odds to make the playoffs in 2021, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
