The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) was dominated by the No. 1 seed Prairie View A&M Panthers this season, who finished with a 17-1 conference record. The No. 2 seed Texas Southern Tigers had the same overall record, but only finished at 14-4 in conference play.
