Kansas City Chiefs star safety Eric Berry has been out for way longer than originally expected and it seems like we finally know why. Berry is suffering bone spurs in his heel that are digging into his Achilles tendon.

This type of injury can linger and there's currently no timetable for the return of the captain and centerpiece of the Chiefs' defense. They've struggled on that side of the ball without Berry, sending them from fantasy viable to fantasy irrelevant in just a few short weeks.

Luckily for KC, first-year starter Patrick Mahomes has been brilliant, setting records left and right on the offensive side of the ball.

Berry missed all of last year with a torn ACL so Kansas City has basically been without their most impactful defensive player for one and a quarter seasons. They are a very different team with Berry on the field and you can't expect Mahomes to keep up this pace for an entire season. So if Berry doesn't return soon, the Chiefs will likely struggle to compete with the NFL's top teams come late in the year and playoff time, assuming they make it that far.
