A casual college football fan might think betting the favorite is the way to go.

And more times than not, that's true.

But the first weekend of college football this year quickly reminded us all that more times than not is far from a guarantee, with the favorites going just 44-42-1 against the spread.

Similar to last year's Week 1, when underdogs covered the spread in 46 of 88 games, taking the favorite wasn't ultimately favorable this past weekend.

Sure, if you took No. 1 Alabama (-24), No. 5 Ohio State (-38.5), or No. 7 Oklahoma (-20.5), you covered easily. However, other Top-10 teams weren't so lucky with No. 4 Wisconsin (-37) and No. 10 Penn State (-24) winning, but not covering the spread.

Just know if you do choose to bet college football games moving forward, the betting favorite and confidence aren't always as synonymous as you may think.
