The San Francisco 49ers came out of nowhere to be one of the top teams in the NFL last season, falling just short in the Super Bowl. They have re-tooled this offseason and appear ready to make another Super Bowl run. However, the team may need to make some difficult decisions to put themselves in a position to do so.

These are three veterans that the 49ers could cut before the 2020 season.

1. C.J. Beathard, QB

Despite losing the backup job to Nick Mullens last season, Kyle Shanahan still kept C.J. Beathard on the roster all season long. It's possible him sticking around is related to the trade rumors that arose, but heading into the 2020 season, it seems unlikely the Niners keep three quarterbacks.

2. Dante Pettis, WR

There have been high expectations put on wide receiver Dante Pettis, who was a second-round draft pick in 2018. He recorded just 27 receptions in his rookie year, then dropped to 11 last season. Pettis is now in a position where he may not make the team, with other players that have proven success on the field competing with him.

3. Solomon Thomas, DL

Much like Pettis, Solomon Thomas has been kept around solely due to the investment San Francisco has in him. The 49ers drafted Thomas third overall in 2017, and he has not come close to playing at that type of level. The defensive lineman struggles to get off blocks both in pursuit of the passer and in run defense. He played all 16 games last season but started just three, totaling 21 tackles with three tackles for a loss. The Niners may need to cut their losses.
