After another lass-than-stellar season, it makes sense for Sam Darnold and the New York Jets to part ways this season. Flashes of Darnold's potential have been occasional at best, but there's still reported interest for the former third overall pick, given a handful of teams needing a new starting QB for 2021.

With that in mind, here are three teams desperate enough to trade a first-round pick for Sam Darnold.

Sam Darnold Trade Rumors

1. San Francisco 49ers

There's already murmurs linking Darnold and the San Francisco 49ers, which isn't surprising. "Desperate" is an apt way to describe the 49ers, who are currently scrambling for a Jimmy Garoppolo replacement. Darnold is an intriguing starting candidate. With QB whisperer Kyle Shanahan and an offense loaded with weapons, it could take Darnold's game to new heights. The No. 12 overall pick is an attractive trade chip that few teams could match.

2. Washington Football Team

The Washington Football Team could be a legit threat next season if they figure out their starting quarterback situation. Alex Smith, Dwayne Haskins and Tyler Heinicke all took turns as Washington's starter this year, but the team still earned a playoff berth thanks to its elite defense. Holding the No. 19 pick, Washington is just outside of the range for one of this year's top QB prospects, but they could get a starting-level talent in Darnold if they offered it to New York.

3. Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are still in search of their next starter following the retirement of Philip Rivers. Indy already missed out on Matthew Stafford, who seemed like a perfect fit. They could target Carson Wentz, but he's coming off of a truly terrible 2020 campaign and the Philadelphia Eagles are still demanding a decent haul in return. Instead, the Colts should offer the No. 21 pick for Darnold, securing a QB with potential and putting him behind a top offensive line. Head coach Frank Reich could be the offensive genius who is finally able to unleash Darnold.
