You're not going to find a college football program with a much more storied history than the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Spanning three centuries, with their first games played in 1899, Notre Dame's football team has featured some of the all-time greats of the game. Naturally, that starts with the quarterback position.

Here are the three greatest quarterbacks in Notre Dame history.

3. Brady Quinn (2003-2006)

When a school's history dates back to a pre-World War I era that didn't have accurate (or sometimes any) statistics kept, you can't put too much weight into raw numbers, but that's certainly an area in which Brady Quinn stands out. Before disappointing at the NFL level, Quinn was a four-year starter at Notre Dame, setting the school records in both career passing yards (11,762) and passing touchdowns (95). That gives him 3,614 more yards and 34 more touchdowns than anyone else in (recorded) school history. He shattered just about every statistical passing record at Notre Dame, and while he doesn't have the storied history of some of the other guys on the list, it's hard to deny how great his numbers were.

2. Johnny Lujack (1943, 1946-1947)

John Lujack Jr. had a gap in his Notre Dame career as he served in the Navy during World War II, but when he returned for the 1946 and 1947 seasons, he put together a phenomenal run. The Fighting Irish went a combined 17-0-1 in those two seasons, winning back-to-back Associated Press national championships. Lujack was a consensus All-American both years, winning the Heisman in 1947.

1. Frank Carideo (1928-1930)

The first name linked with Notre Dame's success in the 1920's is, of course, Knute Rockne — and for good reason. Rockne himself called Frank Carideo the best quarterback he had ever seen, and the pair combined for back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1929 and 1930, going a perfect 19-0. A two-time All-American, Carideo was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
