The Chicago Cubs are coming off of a frustrating 2019 campaign in which they missed the postseason for the first time since 2015. However, despite their disappointing 84-78 record, Chicago still boasts one of the more talented rosters in the MLB and could make the postseason once again in 2020 — if a few key players who have struggled to produce in recent years can get it together and perform at a high level, that is.

With that in mind, here are three Cubs players who are in for make-or-break seasons in 2020.

3. Jose Quintana, SP

The Cubs acquired Jose Quintana at the 2017 trade deadline to bolster their rotation and the move payed dividends for the most part, as the North Siders advanced to NLCS for the second consecutive season. Unfortunately, Quintana hasn't done much since. The 31-year-old southpaw has been anything but effective for Chicago, sporting a middling 26-20 record with a 4.35 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over the last two seasons. 2020 will be a contract year for Quintana and if he continues to underperform, there's a solid chance that he'll be looking for a new home next offseason.

2. Jon Lester, SP

Signed to be the ace of Chicago's rotation, Jon Lester was an integral piece to the club's 2016 World Series squad and is capable of a dominant outing whenever he toes the rubber. Unfortunately, those have been few and far between over recent seasons. The 36-year-old lefty sports a 4.03 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over the last three seasons and led the National League in hits allowed last season. The Cubs have a $10 million buyout option for the final season of Lester's contract (2021) and if the veteran southpaw struggles once again this season, Lester could be on his way out of Chicago once the Cubs' season ends.

1. Yu Darvish, SP

Yu Darvish had been one of the league's most dominant pitchers since 2012, although, after the Cubs signed him in 2018, he's looked like anything but. The 33-year-old righty missed considerable time due to injury in his first season on the north side and when he's been healthy, he's looked like a shell of his former self. In 38 starts with Chicago, Darvish owns a miserable 7-11 record with a 4.16 ERA. The six-year, $126 million pact the Cubs signed him to is quickly becoming an albatross and if Darvish doesn't turn things around in 2020, the club could try and ship him out of Chicago next offseason.
