The Minnesota Vikings are currently gearing up for Week 18 and their looming first-round playoff game. Minnesota's offense received a boost ahead of the postseason on Friday, as it was revealed tight end Irv Smith Jr. will be activated from the injured reserve list.
News of Smith's return has resulted in the departure of another, though.
The Vikings decided to waive fellow TE Nick Muse on Friday. This means the 2022 seventh-round pick didn't even get to play out his entire rookie campaign in Minnesota.
Muse was the No. 227 overall pick in this past April's draft out of South Carolina. Rookie years are famously tough for tight ends, and that proved to be the case for the former Gamecocks stud. He didn't play a single offensive snap for the Vikings in 2022, instead being relegated to just special teams work.
Given how important depth is in the postseason, it's a smart call for Minnesota to cull a suddenly strong position like TE with Smith joining T.J. Hockenson. Johnny Mundt also presents a capable backup option, making Muse obsolete.
