Veteran Tackle Amongst Next Group of Chiefs' Training Camp Cuts
The Kansas City Chiefs closed out their NFL preseason with a 17-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday. With finalizing the 53-man roster on general manager Brett Veach's to-do list, the Chiefs took one step closer by making a few more cuts to start the weekend.
The Chiefs announced that they have parted ways with five players on Saturday. Of the five, the most notable is offensive tackle Roderick Johnson. The former 2017 fifth-round pick spent the first five seasons of his career with three teams before joining Kansas City's practice squad in January.
Chiefs Roster Cuts
Another interesting cut was undrafted 2022 rookie quarterback Dustin Crum. The 2021 MAC MVP looked solid over his last three seasons at Kent State but was outplayed by Chad Henne and Shane Buechele in the preseason, resulting in the duo landing backup roles behind Patrick Mahomes for now.
The three other players that were waived were wide receiver Aaron Parker, as well as linebacker Mike Rose and running back Tayon Fleet-Davis — both of whom are also undrafted rookies.
The Chiefs still have a few more days before their 53-man roster must be finalized. This year's deadline takes place on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. ET, meaning Kansas City must also decide who'll start the year on the PUP or injured lists.
Chiefs Super Bowl Odds
The Chiefs can't afford to have any weak links on their roster if they hope to cap off the season by winning Super Bowl LVII. For now, they have the third-best Super Bowl odds (+1000) on FanDuel Sportsbook, only trailing the Buffalo Bills (+600) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+750).
