Patience has paid off for one veteran NFL running back looking to prove he still has what it takes to perform. Tevin Coleman was signed to the San Francisco 49ers' active roster on Wednesday after his breakout game in Week 5. He will serve as the primary backup to starter Jeff Wilson moving forward.

Coleman has appeared in each of the last two games for the 49ers as a game day elevation. He only lined up for 1 snap in Week 4, but saw his snap count jump to 19 (28%) in Week 5. The 29-year-old took full advantage by logging 23 rushing yards, 44 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns on 11 touches.
If any NFL fans are feeling a bit of deja vu, that's because this is Coleman's second stint with San Francisco. The Indiana product tallied 811 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns across 22 games played with the 49ers from 2019-20. He then signed with the New York Jets in free agency.
The Jets re-signed Coleman on a one-year deal this past March before eventually cutting him loose at the 53-man roster deadline. That was when he joined the 49ers as a practice squad signing. With Elijah Mitchell not close to a return with his knee injury, Coleman has a chance to make a true impact.
The 49ers also signed veteran running back Marlon Mack to their practice squad. It's clear head coach Kyle Shanahan wants to have as many options as possible. San Francisco is currently slated as a 5.5-point road favorite against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
