Saints GM Hints at Trey Hendrickson's Saints Future

New Orleans Saints EDGE Trey Hendrickson had a breakout campaign in 2020, starting in each of his 15 appearances for the team this season after earning just three starts in his first three NFL seasons. Ranking in the top five for sacks in 2020 will surely draw some attention for the free-agent-to-be.
While Saints GM Mickey Loomis would like to bring Hendrickson back, he knows that it could be a tall task with New Orleans in salary cap hell.
Loomis says he'd like to keep Trey Hendrickson, but notes that the pass rusher will draw a lot of interest in free agency. Says he's not yet sure how strong of a play they can make for different players until they know where the cap falls.

At a projected $100 million over the cap, the Saints' salary situation needs to be addressed this offseason. Staring down that reality of needing to subtract rather than add, it makes re-signing Hendrickson incredibly difficult.
A former third-round pick from FAU, Hendrickson tied for third in sacks this season with 13.5 while adding 22 solo tackles and 1 forced fumble. He played 68% of the team's defensive snaps this season, so his potential loss is huge.
However, New Orleans needs to figure out if Hendrickson's 2020 season was more than just a fluke. If they feel he won't be able to repeat it, forking over a large contract this offseason might not be the best long-term move,
With a new era likely starting for the Saints, 2021 could be a rare down year for the successful franchise if their roster is gutted this summer.
