Despite a limited starting rotation behind the strong trio of Miles Mikolas, Adam Wainwright and Dakota Hudson, the St. Louis Cardinals head into June in second place in the NL Central division.

Three solid starting pitchers in the rotation is a great piece of the puzzle, but not enough to take the Cardinals to their ultimate goals of a deep postseason run and possible World Series title come October.

That's exactly why Cardinals fans will be fired up by the latest Trade Deadline rumors, which link St. Louis to a pair of top level starting pitchers, according to MLB insider Jeff Passan.

Cardinals Rumors

Passan detailed a list of 148 "names you need to know" as trade deadline season begins to heat up. He named a trio of names most likely on the move, including two front-line rotation options in Luis Castillo and Frankie Montas.

Rumors suggested this pair of starting pitchers may move during the abbreviated offseason, but both found themselves stuck on losing ballclubs for at least the start of one more season. Castillo's Cincinnati Reds are just 18-32 despite the young righty tossing a 3.38 ERA in his first five starts.

Montas's Oakland Athletics are just 20-33 on the year and he's pitched to a 3.20 ERA in 11 starts.

Trade Deadline Rumors

According to Passan, the Cardinals are considered "among the contenders" in for Castillo at the deadline. He also tells readers, "don't discount St. Louis, either" in the Montas market, especially "if Jack Flaherty or Steven Matz struggles to regain form coming off rehab stints."

The return of Flaherty gives the Cardinals some hope. He was shut down in Spring Training with shoulder bursitis after pitching to a 3.22 ERA in 2021.

Matz struggled at the beginning of his first season in St. Louis, allowing 25 runs in 37.1 innings before landing on the injured list himself.

Adding either Castillo or Montas is a blockbuster-level move that would easily propel St. Louis to the World Series conversation. Currently, FanDuel Sportsbook's World Series odds show the Cardinals at +2500 (T-10th).
