Top Pirates Prospect Wins Double-A Player of the Week
Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Mike Burrows continues to improve with each passing minor-league season. He's looked like a man on a mission every time he steps on the mound, which was highlighted on Tuesday when he received Double-A Player of the Week honors.

Burrows started one game with Double-A Altoona last week in the club's 5-2 victory over the Harrisburg Senators on May 26. The 22-year-old pitched seven innings for the Curve that night, finishing with eight strikeouts, two hits, one walk and the coveted victory.
Last week's performance was just a microcosm of Burrows' 2022 campaign. He's gone 3-0 in nine starts so far, pitching to a 1.90 ERA, 0.867 WHIP and 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. Continuing this play could lead to a Triple-A call-up in his near future.
The Waterford, CT native began the season as the Pirates' No.11-ranked prospect on MLB.com with an estimated Major-League debut set for 2024. Although that still may be the case, it'll be hard to deny an early promotion if he continues to dominate Double-A.
Although they haven't been as bad compared to past years, the Pirates will likely miss the playoffs again in 2022. The silver lining to that situation is that they may be able to afford giving Burrows a brief look closer to the fall.
Until then, the organization hopes that Burrows' play isn't a flash in the pan and that he can be a contributing pitching staff member somewhere down the line.
