None of the top six defenses from this offseason's average draft position (ADP) data rank in the top six in fantasy scoring. In fact, only one of them (the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) even ranks in the top 12.
Fantasy production for defenses is all about matchups and situation. That's why so many fantasy managers opt to lean heavily on the waiver wire and "stream" the position by readily adding and dropping defenses every week to find a new starter.
If you're one of those managers, The Duel is here to help with our top fantasy football streaming defenses for Week 5.
Streaming Defense Fantasy Football Week 5
3. Carolina Panthers (vs PHI)
The Carolina Panthers may not be undefeated any longer, but their defense still looks like the real deal. Giving up big points in Week 4 is excusable since it came against the terrific Dallas Cowboys offense, and the Panthers still stack up as a top-12 defense according to Pro Football Focus' grades. Jalen Hurts has this Philadelphia Eagles' offense rolling, but they've also benefited from two matchups with bottom-seven defenses. Hurts has been sacked multiple times in each of his last three games, and the Panthers' elite pass rush (second in the NFL in sacks, first in pressure rate) should be able to do some damager here.
2. Minnesota Vikings (vs DET)
The Detroit Lions are one of the worst teams in football, and they're accordingly sitting as 7.5-point underdogs against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5. That means Jared Goff will likely be forced into plenty of obvious passing situations, which is never good for a guy who has already been sacked 10 times on the year. The Vikings' defense is nothing to write home about, but this one is all about the matchup. There aren't many defenses that won't be viable streaming options against the Lions.
1. Las Vegas Raiders (vs CHI)
It wasn't as ugly as his 9-sack game in Week 3, but Justin Fields did not impress against the lowly Lions in Week 4 either. He completed just 11 passes while giving up 1 sack and 1 interception. And of course, if Andy Dalton starts this matchup doesn't exactly become a scary one. The Raiders left the ranks of the undefeated on Monday, but they still check in at No. 3 in PFF's overall defensive grade, as well as No. 1 in pass-rush grade. This should finally be a breakout week for their defense from a fantasy football perspective.
