Tigers Make Final Roster Cut Before Opening Day

The 2023 MLB season is here now that Opening Day has finally arrived. The Detroit Tigers hope to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2014 this season, and it all starts with a matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday at 3:10 p.m. ET.
Although most clubs have their rosters finalized a few days before Opening Day, the Tigers had one more roster cut to make ahead of their date with the Rays. The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen reports that relief pitcher Edwin Uceta has been designated for assignment.

After spending 2022 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Uceta was claimed off waivers by the Tigers back in January. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old left a lot to be desired in Spring Training. He pitched 11 innings over eight appearances (one start) for Detroit, tallying a 4.91 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP along the way.
While Uceta is on his way to Triple-A Toledo, the Tigers have added pitchers Trey Wingenter and Chasen Shreve to the 40-man roster. Wingenter hasn't pitched in an MLB game since 2019, but his strong Spring Training (seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts) makes him worth another look.
Meanwhile, Shreve also showed promise in the preseason. After a mediocre campaign with the New York Mets last year, the 32-year-old veteran tallied a 2.25 ERA with 10 strikeouts over eight relief appearances this spring.
The Tigers' pitching must be on point if they hope to begin the 2023 campaign with a win over the Rays. FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists Tampa Bay as the -245 moneyline favorite leading up to first pitch.
