Sunday marks an important day on the MLB's offseason calendar, the official opening of the international signing period. To no surprise, a number of the top international prospects inked contracts quickly on Sunday morning.

The Detroit Tigers took advantage of this early phase, inking three top-50 international prospects on Sunday.

MLB insider Jesse Sanchez reported the news, indicating the Tigers have inked deals with No. 32 Enrique Jimenez, a catcher from Venezuela, No. 44 Maikol Orozco, a shortstop from Venezuela, and No. 48 Cristian Perez, an outfielder from Dominican Republic.

Detroit took a variety approach in addressing positional needs with these signings.

International signings are a bit of a gamble, especially considering all three of these prospects are either 16 or 17 years old. But, international signings have paid off for the franchise in previous years. The Tigers signed Juan Encarnacion back in 1992. He went on to spend five years as an everyday player in Detroit's lineup, smashing 53 home runs in that span.
