The Detroit Tigers own the third-best bullpen ERA in baseball despite only winning nine of their first 32 games of the season. The front office decided to add to that existing depth by claiming former Pittsburgh Pirate Sam Howard off waivers on Friday and designating him to the Triple-A level.

Howard will join the Toledo Mud Hens after making three relief appearances for Pittsburgh in 2022. The 29-year-old gave up two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out one across 2.0 innings pitched. He was designated for assignment and now takes an open spot on Detroit's 40-man roster.

Overall, Howard owns a career ERA of 5.34 to go along with a WHIP of 1.51. He has also posted a 7-7 record and struck out 112 batters in a total of 91.0 innings pitched. The Tigers have to hope he can turn things around with the help of their coaching staff and become a reliable lefty down the road.

Detroit will look to make up ground in the American League Central division when they take on the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series this weekend. The Tigers send Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound on Friday night and are slated as -162 home favorites on the moneyline.

The Tigers remain long shot to win the World Series at +25000 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
