What Taysom Hill Being No. 2 on Saints QB Depth Chart Means for Jameis Winston

The New Orleans Saints QB situation was one of the NFL's biggest stories all offseason, and it took plenty of twists and turns. They kept Drew Brees in a town, and he's the obvious starting option.
They also extended Taysom Hill with a shockingly big contract, though, and still brought in Jameis Winston on a one-year deal. Their initial depth chart lists Hill as the QB2 behind Brees — but what does that mean?

Realistically, the order they're listed might not mean whole lot. Hill is certainly going to get snaps and touches even when Brees is on the field — that much has always been clear. And if Brees goes down during a game early in the season, Hill might step up since he's more familiar with the offense.
However, it's hard to see Hill being ahead of Winston if the team needs someone to take over as a full-time starter. If Brees were to suffer a serious injury, Sean Payton is going to need to adjust the offensive gameplan anyway — Hill and Winston both play a very different style of football than Brees.
In that situation, it's hard to imagine the team opts to go with a player who has thrown just 15 passes in the NFL over a 5,000-yard passer in Winston.
With Winston at the helm, we could see more of Hill than we do with Brees starting, but it would be a surprise to see Hill taking snaps as an every-down starter.

The favorites:
① Ravens (+420)
② Chiefs (+420)
③ 49ers (+700)
④ Saints (+900)
⑤ Cowboys (+1100)@TheDuelSportshttps://t.co/OWzPF4lmgR
It's certainly interesting to see Hill listed ahead of Winston, but ultimately this situation is a lot more nuanced than can be conveyed by a simple depth chart ranking.
