While they may still be very much afloat in the NFC South standings, the 4-8 Carolina Panthers have been a disappointing team to watch in 2022. The underwhelming efforts mainly stem on the offensive side of the ball for a team that scores just the 25th-most points per game in football.
On Monday, Carolina addressed this lack of offense by announcing quarterback Baker Mayfield will be waived.
Head coach Steve Wilks provided his initial reaction to the news.
You can tell Wilks is torn by the Panthers' decision. He said Baker has been "nothing but a professional, complete pro." He later added, "This is a tough business. Sitting in this seat, it was a tough decision on my part, but something I felt like was the best move for the team moving forward.''
It's never easy to see a former starter waived off of the roster, especially considering Mayfield's tumultuous tenure in the NFL. He won the starting role out of camp but injuries and poor play cost him the job.
