The Pittsburgh Steelers wasted no time moving on from the Ben Roethlisberger era, selecting quarterback Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. It's clear the front office sees him as the future of the organization, but that doesn't mean he will see a ton of playing time right away.

In fact, Steelers insider Brooke Pryor recently gave Pickett a 40% chance of sitting out the entire 2022 season. Pittsburgh has a defense capable of shutting down opposing offenses, which means all starting QB Mitchell Trubisky has to do is avoid costly turnovers to keep his job week after week.

Early reports out of minicamp suggest that Trubisky is wasting no time building a rapport in the locker room, too. His five years of NFL experience make him a much better option in early matchups against the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots than a rookie that is still adjusting to the NFL level.

Of course, seeing Trubisky struggle in the first half of the season would change everything. The Steelers have a bye in Week 9 and Pryor mentioned they could opt for a QB change then. The more realistic debut date for Pickett would be in Week 18 if the Steelers have a playoff berth secured.

Pickett is already a fan favorite in Pittsburgh and has the fourth best-selling jersey in the league, according to NFL Shop. That makes this a QB competition worth keeping an eye on in 2022. The Steelers have odds set at +280 to reach the postseason, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
