The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense could be even more shorthanded when they host the New York Jets in Week 4. NFL insider Mike Garafolo reports that star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is officially in concussion protocol, according to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Tomlin added that Fitzpatrick entered protocol following the Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns last Thursday. More testing is required to determine whether or not the two-time Pro-Bowler can suit up this weekend.

Minkah Fitzpatrick Injury Update

Every player deals with concussions differently, so time will tell when Fitzpatrick will be able to return to action. The news comes on the heels of the NFLPA demanding an investigation after Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa cleared concussion protocol on Sunday in a surprisingly quick amount of time.

Fitzpatrick must clear a five-step process before he returns to the field. It involves several physical tests, with the final step being clearance from both the team's doctor as well as an independent neurological expert. If both sides agree, then the 25-year-old can resume team activities.

The two-time All-Pro defender has already been busy this season. Fitzpatrick leads the Steelers with 2 interceptions (including one for a touchdown) and has the second-most tackles (24) on the team while also breaking up a pair of passes. Furthermore, opposing quarterbacks only have a 35.0 passer rating on the 10 targets he's seen.

Fitzpatrick has been on the field for each of Pittsburgh's 240 defensive snaps so far. In other words, his presence will be sorely missed if he's absent for even one game, so hopefully he has a speedy recovery.

Jets vs Steelers Week 4 Odds

Even with Fitzpatrick in concussion protocol, things still look promising for Pittsburgh this week. The Steelers are currently listed as 3.5-point home favorites and are -180 on the moneyline against the Jets on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
