The Pittsburgh Steelers offense isn't working. They're the fifth-worst scoring unit in the league right now. Pittsburgh only outranks four teams offensively, and three of those four are either starting a rookie quarterback or have lost their signal-caller to injuries.

And yet, according to comments he made via the Steelers' website, offensive coordinator Matt Canada doesn't sound like he intends to change much.

"We're gonna stick with what we're doing... Obviously, that's not the answer and that's not the sexy answer but we believe we're on the right track."

To be fair, it's entirely possible that Canada is just playing coy. It's not like he's going to reveal his game plan via pre-game comments.

But the fact of the matter is this offense needs to change – fast. Once a risk-taking gunslinger, Ben Roethlisberger has transformed into the league's preeminent dink-and-dunk passer. He owns the league's sixth-lowest average depth of target (aDOT) and has only completed 3-of-13 attempts that have traveled 20-plus yards downfield, per ProFootballFocus.

That 23.1% completion rate is the lowest among all qualified quarterbacks save for Jacoby Brissett.

Despite that conservative approach, Roethlisberger is responsible for 6 turnover worthy plays, which ties him for the second most in the league, per PFF. High-risk, low-reward plays are not what you want.

And because defenses no longer fear this passing attack, Pittsburgh's run game has been nonexistent for the second year in a row. The Steelers were the league's worst rushing offense in 2020 and still rank dead-last in 2021, averaging 53.0 yards per game. Generating that little on the ground is hard to stomach after spending a first-round pick on RB Najee Harris.

There don't appear to be many easy fixes here, but hopefully Canada only made those comments so he wouldn't tip his hand. Because it's obvious something needs to change.
