New Orleans Saints fans are chomping at the bit to see quarterback Jameis Winston back in action on offense. Unfortunately, offseason ACL surgery and a foot sprain suffered earlier this month have kept that from being a possibility. The latest update from camp does nothing to change that, either.

Saints vs Packers Preseason

Head coach Dennis Allen told reporters that Winston will not play in the team's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Friday. The veteran signal-caller has been participating in drills throughout joint practices this week, but it's clear that he is not ready for live snaps quite yet.

That means Week 8 of the 2021 NFL season remains the last time Winston has seen game action. At that time, he had guided the Saints to a 5-2 record and looked like a rejuvenated starter. He'll have a final chance to play in the preseason (August 26) before the regular season starts on September 11.

Look for backup Andy Dalton to start against the Packers and play at least a few series with the first-team offense. He completed all five of his pass attempts for 51 yards and connected with running back Dwayne Washington for a touchdown in the preseason opener.

It'll be Ian Book that takes a majority of the snaps, though. The second-year pro was 15-of-22 against the Houston Texans with 121 passing yards and 1 interception. Book also added 22 yards on the ground on four carries. K.J. Costello could see some playing time in the fourth quarter, too.

The Saints enter Friday as a 3-point road underdog with odds set at +145 on the moneyline, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
