Aside from Drew Brees, head coach Sean Payton's name is synonymous with the New Orleans Saints. After all, he's been the bench boss since 2006 and is the mastermind behind the organization's only Super Bowl title.

Even though the 2021 NFL season didn't go the way that the Saints have planned, fans expected him to be back behind the bench in 2022. Unfortunately, team owner Gayle Benson's latest update on Payton's future might be concerning to the fanbase.

Benson told reporters Monday that Payton's future with the franchise is up in the air. When asked about when the Saints will know their coach's decision, Benson added "he'll let us know soon enough."

If Payton chooses to leave the Saints, New Orleans would like to know sooner than later. Teams with open coaching positions are trying to fill those voids as soon as possible, leaving the Saints with fewer options the longer this goes on.

One of the reasons that could lead to Payton's exit is that FOX Sports wants to add him to their broadcasting team, according to multiple rumors. NFL Hall of Famer Troy Aikman could leave Fox to join Amazon Sports and someone with as great of a football mind as Payton's would make a great replacement.

Payton has a career head coaching record of 161-97 (including playoffs) to go along with his Super Bowl 44 ring and 2006 NFL Coach of the Year trophy. No matter who his successor is, it'll be hard to replace the impact he's left both on the Saints organization and the city of New Orleans.
