We're nearly done with the first two months of the current baseball season, meaning July's 2022 MLB Draft is only right around the corner. This year's draft will be held from July 17-19 and a lot of eyes will be looking to see who each team drafts, including the Kansas City Royals.
After a disappointing 2021 campaign, the Royals hold the ninth overall selection in the draft's first round. There are different routes that they can take since they need help across the board, but MLB.com is projecting them to take the son of a former All-Star in the site's latest 2022 mock draft.
Kansas City Royals Mock Draft
MLB.com has the Royals using the No. 9 pick to select Bishop Gorman High School outfielder Justin Crawford. His father, Carl, spent time with three teams over 15 Major-League seasons, making four MLB All-Star appearances — including when he was named MVP in the 2009 game.
Crawford's stock has risen after a senior year that saw him record 77 hits, five home runs and 52 RBIs while batting .503 over 153 at-bats. His father was a four-time American League stolen base leader and he could follow in those footsteps, proven by his 20 stolen bags in 42 games last year.
The Royals' outfield has been underperforming this season and bringing in someone of Crawford's down the line could provide a much-needed boost. If he even has a sliver of the career that his father had, Kansas City fans will be happy for years to come.
In the meantime, the Royals will continue grinding through the 2022 MLB season. They only currently have +30000 odds to win the World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook, which ranks eighth-worst across the Majors.
