The New England Patriots delivered some shocking news to the NFL world on Tuesday when they released former NFL MVP Cam Newton, making Mac Jones their starting quarterback. Now a free agent, everyone has begun speculating where Newton will end up.

One logical choice that immediately came to mind was the Washington Football Team. Washington is coached by Ron Rivera, Newton's longtime head coach with the Carolina Panthers. When you couple that with the fact that Washington doesn't exactly have a long-term solution at QB with Ryan Fitzpatrick, you can understand why people considered it a legitimate option for Newton.

However, Rivera was asked about this and quickly put those rumors to bed, claiming the team isn't interested in signing Newton and is comfortable moving forward with Fitzpatrick as the starting QB.

"It did pop up on our radar. But just so you know, Ryan Fitzpatrick is our starting quarterback. Okay, so that's where we are. We have three guys we like that all came to camp, did a nice job for us and we're going to go forward with it."

Adding a quarterback this close to the start of the season would be tricky regardless of the situation, not to mention how that might look to the rest of the locker room. Plus, is Cam Newton even an upgrade over Ryan Fitzpatrick at this point?
