As the 2021 MLB season nears its end, the Cincinnati Reds are in the middle of a battle for the final National League Wild Card spot. Unfortunately, that fight will be a little tougher after the latest injury update regarding outfielder Tyler Naquin.

The Reds announced on Friday that they have placed Naquin on the 10-day injured list with bruised ribs. The 30-year-old veteran sustained the injury when he collided with Cincinnati shortstop Jose Barrero during last Saturday's 6-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Naquin's placement is retroactive to September 14, meaning that he could be back in the lineup by next Friday. On the other hand, no timetable has been given for his injury, so he might need a little longer to heal.

Naquin was in the middle of having the best season of his six-year career, tallying new career-highs in both home runs (19) and RBIs (70). He's pretty much in the top-5 for each of Cincinnati's batting statistics this year, so his absence will be felt.

The injury couldn't have come at a worse time for the Reds, who are trailing the St. Louis Cardinals by 1.0 games for the final NL Wild Card spot. The good news is that Cincinnati has a total of 10 games between the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals to close out the year. The bad news is that the club also has to play the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox for a total of five games as well.

The Reds will get a chance to inch closer to a playoff spot as they take on the Dodgers Friday night. The game is projected to be a close one as Los Angeles is the 1.5-run favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
