The 2022 MLB season is right around the corner with Opening Day exactly one week away. The Boston Red Sox made it to the American League Championship Series last year but ultimately fell in six games to the Houston Astros. Needless to say, they'll be looking for more success in 2022.
One way that the Red Sox can achieve their goals is by their top players reaching their full potential. The good news for Boston fans is that ESPN's Jeff Passan is predicting that one of the club's top players could be a Most Valuable Player candidate this season.
Red Sox News
Passan is making the prediction that third baseman Rafael Devers could be a potential AL MVP dark horse during the 2022 MLB campaign. The 25-year-old finished 11th in the award race last season, so it's safe the say that Red Sox fans would love for him to take home the hardware this year.
Devers set a career high of 38 home runs in 2021, recording 37 doubles and 113 RBI along the way as well. His .279/.352/.538 slash line was also an improvement over the previous year and is something that management would like him to build upon going forward.
The Red Sox signed Devers to an $11.2 million contract this offseason to avoid arbitration, so an AL MVP victory would put him in a place to demand more money in 2023. Considering how tight the AL East division is expected to be this year, Boston could certainly use an MVP-caliber performance.
Rafael Devers AL MVP Odds
Although Passan might view Devers as an AL MVP dark horse, oddsmakers suggest that he actually does have a realistic chance at winning the award ahead of Opening Day.
FanDuel Sportsbook is currently giving the 25-year-old +2000 odds to be named 2022 AL MVP, which puts him in a tie with the New York Yankees' Aaron Judge for the fourth-best odds.
