The Tampa Bay Rays have had a strong second half to the 2022 MLB season, currently occupying the American League's top wild-card spot with a 69-52 record. With each remaining game meaning more, the Rays don't have any room for weakness, leading to a start pitcher being optioned on Saturday.
The Rays have announced that they've optioned veteran SP Ryan Yarbrough to Triple-A Durham. A big part of this move has to do with Tampa Bay being off in two of the next six days, meaning the club doesn't exactly need a fifth starter for now.
Rays Roster News
Yarbrough's journey with the Rays has certainly been a rocky one. After racking up a 27-12 record in his first two seasons, he's gone just 11-19 in the last three. Unfortunately, his struggles have only been amplified this year by going 1-8 with a 4.87 ERA and 1.376 WHIP in 16 games (nine starts).
It seems like Yarbrough's disasterous outing against the Boston Red Sox on Friday was the final straw. He surrended a homer and five earned runs on eight hits with two walks over 3.1 innings, playing a key role in the Rays' eventual 9-8 loss.
Some fans are optimistic that Yarbrough's demotion can help him bounce back, however, that may not be the case. The 30-year-old was already optioned to Triple-A back in June and July, going 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA, 26 strikeouts and 12 walks over 27.2 innings.
Perhaps the third time is the charm as far as Yarbrough's concerned. The Rays could really use him returning to form if they hope to win the first World Series title in franchise history. For now, Tampa Bay has + 4500 odds (T-No. 11) to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
