With the Atlanta Braves' lead in the National League East standings widening, the Philadelphia Phillies were dealt a crushing blow on Thursday. Philadelphia placed slugging first baseman Rhys Hoskins back on the injured list. In addition to his placement on the IL, reports suggest that Hoskins will be done for the year.
Interestingly enough, it's not the groin this time. Hoskins announced he suffered a tear in his lower abdomen that will require season-ending surgery.
This injury could not come at a worse time for Philadelphia. Hoskins just spent two weeks on the shelf with a groin injury before he returned to action over the weekend. The first baseman saw action in three games before his latest trip back to the IL.
Rhys Hoskins Injury Update
Currently, Philadelphia treads water in the NL East standings, now trailing the Braves by 5.0 games. The Phillies also trail the second NL Wild Card spot by 5.0 games and their hopes of a postseason appearances are dwindling.
Hoskins, prior to this injury troubles, had been terrific for the Phillies again in 2021. He's slashed .247/.334/.530 with 27 home runs and 71 RBIs through 107 games played.
Philadelphia will look to persevere through this latest injury blow and currently holds +390 odds to win the NL East on FanDuel Sportsbook. It won't be surprising to see those odds slip sharply in the wake of this latest injury update.
