The NFL world was sent into a frenzy Sunday night after former New Orleans Saints great Drew Brees said in a tweet he could play football again in 2022. It's a possibility no one expected given had Brees transitioned into being a full-time media member and battled through injuries over the last few years of his career.
Despite Brees' comments, league insider Peter King doesn't see a comeback being realistic.
Drew Brees Comeback
King cited two people close to Brees who downplayed the quarterback's return potential. One friend hasn't heard anything about the future Hall-of-Famer taking the field again, and another person close to the legendary QB simply stated, "He's not playing football."
"One friend of Brees told me Sunday he hasn’t mentioned playing to him this offseason, and his left shoulder surgery May 2, at age 43, after not playing football for 16 months, would seems to make a return to football problematic at best. Another person who knows Brees told me Sunday night, “He’s not playing football.” "- Peter King, NBC Sports
These comments shed some insight in regards to Brees' tweet. He may have just thrown those words out there in the spur of the moment following his very quick departure from NBC.
Saints head coach Dennis Allen even thinks the QB didn't really mean a return is on the horizon.
Brees even contemplating a comeback will be a huge story story throughout the offseason. It remains to be seen if the 43-year-old takes the field again.
