Pete Carroll Gives Update on Seahawks' QB Competition

One of the more interesting stories this NFL offseason has surrounded the Seattle Seahawks' quarterback situation. With Russell Wilson moving on to the Denver Broncos, the starting QB job is up for grabs between Drew Lock and Geno Smith.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll provided an update on the QB competition following Thursday's practice. Although he expects a "real battle" for the starting job, Carroll didn't hesitate to say that Smith is "still ahead" in the race.

Seahawks Roster Rumors
Even though Smith is ahead, Carroll is confident that Lock is good enough to catch up. The 25-year-old has only been with the Seahawks for a handful of months, but the organization expects him to be fully caught up by training camp next month.
"By the time we get through camp [Lock will] be there. He’s really bright. It makes sense to him. He’s really sharp in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage and all of that. So it’s just time that he needs, and there’s nothing we can do but gain some more of that.

While Smith's tenure with the Seahawks has given him the edge in the competition thus far, he also looked like the better quarterback last year. He started in three starts for Seattle in 2021, completing 65-of-95 passes for 702 yards and five touchdowns to one interception.
Meanwhile, Lock didn't impress too much in his six games (three starts) with the Broncos last year. His passing percentage (60.4%) was worse than Smith's (68.4%), turning his 67 passes into 787 yards, two TDs and a pair of interceptions.
There's still plenty of time for either man to make their case, but it's clear that it's Smith's job to lose until proven otherwise.
Seahawks Super Bowl Odds
At the end of the day, the Seahawks will go with whichever quarterback gives them a better chance at success. If that goal is to win a Super Bowl, there's a lot of work to do, proven by FanDuel Sportsbook listing Seattle at +13000 (T-No. 28) to win next season's championship.
