The New York Mets are rolling with a league-best 14-5 record and on the heels of six straight series wins. This championship caliber squad is also playing with a big chip on their shoulder as they continue to deal with a slew of hit by pitches.
Pete Alonso was the latest victim (again) on Tuesday night when he was drilled up near the head in the 8th inning of a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Thankfully, Alonso was ok after the beaning, but tempers flared at Busch Stadium and continued on after the game.
Alonso's wife Haley sounded off on her Instagram following the game, delivering a strong message to pitchers around the league.
Pete Alonso Hit by Pitch
Haley re-posted SNY's Instagram clip of the scary hit by pitch, with a short message of her own.
It read, "2nd time this season Pete has been hit in the head and the 4th time the team has been hit neck up. It's only April. Pitchers have been focusing so much on velocity that they have completely lost control. It's getting ridiculous. This could end someone's career."
Below is a video of the latest incident.
Haley's message rings true, and most importantly ends with an ominous but valid thought. These incidents can end someone's career.
Hopefully this is an odd baseball aberration, because the Mets have seen enough hit by pitches just a few weeks into the 2022 season.
